Arc Furnace Physics

While it may seem strange to find a book devoted to the physics of an industrial process, the scope for applying physics to arc furnaces is wide. Various states of matter are involved — the plasma of the arc itself, steel and refractories in the solid state, steel as liquid, slag as an ionic liquid, and the gases and fumes evolved with the furnace. Most of the engineers and managers who are responsible for arc furnaces do not have the opportunity or time to study all the widely dispersed, previously published information on arc furnaces. The authors’ intention is that Arc Furnace Physics supply useful information needed in the continual quest to extract improved performance from the arc furnace. The result is a comprehensive encyclopedia of a technology which still holds much development potential to be tapped.
